Basically ante is used in such types of poker as Seven Card Stud, Razz, Lowball (Deuce to Seven). In Texas Hold’em, it is usually used in tournaments, and is introduced into the game at the late stages of the tournament.
What is ante used for?
It helps to form the initial pot before betting rounds that gives players an incentive to participate more frequently in the hand, and fight for the pot. Thus, the game with ante is much faster and does not permit foot dragging of the game.
Typically, the size of the ante is several times smaller than the size of the big blind. And when playing in tournaments, ante size increases with the blinds increase.
